I was lucky enough to land the #5 pick in the Dropping Dimes Expert League draft held on October 12th, 2006. There may not be popular consensus on who should be the top pick overall this year, but most are in agreement who the top five in any draft should be. The order in which those five players are drafted is another story for another day. You could make it a top six depending on how you feel about Dwyane Wade and his three-point shot.
My first pick was easy; I just waited and picked the guy who was left over after LBJ, the Matrix, Dirk and KG went off the board. After that, the heavy lifting began.

Dropping Dimes’ Expert Roto League: Dennis Velasco’s Team

The Dropping Dimes Experts League draft was held on Thursday, October 12th, 2006. Perhaps some of the fantasy owners in the field wanted to hex the rest of the league Friday the 13th style, as they were milking the clock down as early as the first round! No big deal though, because unless you are in college and stacked your schedule such that you have no class on Friday, what better activity is there to do on a Thursday night than a fantasy basketball draft? (Note to our readers: I do not follow either Grey’s Anatomy or ER, though I hear both are quality televsion shows.)
We have asked our fellow team owners to send us their answers to our questions re: their newly minted fantasy squad. First up, who else…our head honcho, Dennis Velasco!

Round 6, Pick 10: Wally Szczerbiak, SG/SF, Boston Celtics
Wally Szczerbiak? Wally Szczerbiak?!?!?!?! Yes, Wally Szczerbiak.
While Szczerbiak isn’t exactly that “sexy” name you’d like to keep getting in your draft, the fact is, around now is the time to start complementing the team of players you’ve already chosen as your core group. Szczerbiak does a lot of things well, such as putting up a decent amount of points, treys, and percentages. Of course, we have to keep in mind the splits Szczerbiak had since he was traded in midseason from the Minnesota Timberwolves to the Celtics.

Dropping Dimes Draft Blog: Round 6, Pick 9

Round 6, Pick 9: Nenad Krstic, PF/C, New Jersey Nets
On a squad that already totes one of the leagues best rebounders in Kevin Garnett, along with solid forward options in Rasheed Wallace and Rashard Lewis, I don’t exactly need front court help. However, what I do need is someone that is actually center-eligible for two reasons:
1) We start two centers in this league, and I see the drop-off from this point being quite steep, and…
2) Rasheed Wallace lost his center-status this year in a lot of leagues. While I fully expect him to get it back at some point, I’ll need someone in there now.
Add in the fact that Krstic will eventually be my “C2,” and he could end up being a steal this late in the draft in a two-center league.

Dropping Dimes’ Position Rankings: Centers

Similar to the NBA game, if you have top-notch options at the five spot, you have a strong chance for success in fantasy play. Gone are the days of Patrick Ewing, Hakeem Olajuwan and David Robinson dominating fantasy leagues by their extraordinary play. Here and now, the center position has to call in reinforcements from the power forward spot to boost its profile. Make sure you look out for forwards who might acquire center eligibility during the season; having that happen to one of your players might be like holding a winning lottery ticket.
The four staff members at Dropping Dimes were asked to rank the top 25 at each position. The top player received one “point,” the second player received two points, etc. Players who were not in the top 25, but thought to be able to crack the top 25 at some point in the season were given a value of 30. Players not on the radar were given a value of 40. The average ranking is listed in parentheses after the player’s team name.

Dropping Dimes’ Position Rankings: Small Forwards

Good fantasy teams ask this from their small forwards. 1) Be a main scorer for the team. 2) Shoot enough threes, dish the rock and grab those steals to help out the guards on the team. 3) Hit the boards and block some shots to support the big men on the roster. 4) Everything else being equal, shoot good percentages from anywhere on the court.
It seems like a tall order, and only the superstars are able to do all of the above. That is why several players from this position will be drafted in the first two rounds despite the large number of viable options. In reality this position is even deeper than listed below, but some players were put at shooting guard and others at power forward.

DroppingDimes’ Position Rankings: Point Guards

Though seemingly very deep, this year’s fantasy drafts could easily see four point guards go off the board within the first 12 selections. The top tier of this season’s point guard class is obviously one that not only drops dimes at will, but also dominates in another category or two (whether they be scoring buckets, swiping rocks, or draining three-balls). This breakdown should not only give an idea as to what to expect from the top point men this season, but also to show that if you aren’t lucky enough to land one of the top five, your team will be sufficiently staffed with any of the top 25 mentioned here. We’re also starting to see an emergence of a “Point Guard by Committee” on a few teams, which may hurt the value of a few guys.
Without further ado, your 2006 fantasy basketball point guards.

Solid. Reliable. Consistent. For a team with risky picks like Allen Iverson, Gerald Wallace and Josh Smith, it looks like it is a good time to go for some stability. I actually ran into this player at a steakhouse during my last visit to New York City. I guess that is as good a sign as any to pick a player.

Dropping Dimes Draft Blog: Round 5, Pick 9

My most vivid memory of Chris Webber was the infamous time-out. April 5, 1993, it was the Fab 5’s second consecutive trip to the NCAA Championship. Michigan was down by two points to North Carolina with 11 seconds left in the game. Chris Webber got to a loose ball near the sidelines. Two Carolina players converged on Webber immediately. Webber puts his hands together to form a “T” in an attempt to call a time-out. Michigan did not have any time-outs left and in resulted in a technical foul which sealed the game for North Carolina. Not the way you want to end your collegiate career.
Last year, Chris Webber played in 75 games. Do you remember the last time Webber played in 75 games? I don’t. You have to go back to the ‘99-‘00 season. Can he do it again? Or will he take more “time out” from the floor?
